What you do before we arrive makes the biggest difference to the damage:
In older Western Sydney homes, galvanised steel pipework corrodes from the inside and fails in several places over time. Other causes include high water pressure, tree roots, shifting ground, worn fittings and the odd cold snap in the Blue Mountains and Lithgow. A visible leak is sometimes one of several weak spots, so we check the pipe around it before we repair it.
If the meter keeps ticking with everything off, there's a leak somewhere. We find it with acoustic detection and pressure testing, so we know where to open up instead of guessing and cutting holes. When the leak's under a slab or in a wall, that saves a lot of repair work.
Most policies treat a sudden burst differently from a slow leak, so document everything and read the fine print. We can supply photos and a written description of the cause. For what repairs typically cost, see what a plumber costs to fix a leak. If it's happening now, our emergency plumber team answers 24/7.
Our leak repair guide gives these typical ranges:
Yes. Burst pipes are exactly what our 24/7 service exists for, and a plumber answers the phone.
Usually at the front boundary near the meter, or in the garden tap area. Call us and we'll guide you to it on the phone.
Sudden escape of water is often covered. We document the cause and repair with photos so you have what the insurer needs.
Turn off the water at the main, usually near the meter at the front boundary. If hot water pipes are involved, switch off the hot water system. Collect or divert what you can, take photos for insurance, and call us. If water is near power points, keep clear and switch off at the board only if it's dry and safe to do so.
Turn off every tap and appliance and check your water meter. If it's still moving, water is escaping somewhere. Other signs are damp or musty smells, stained ceilings, or an unexplained jump in your water bill. We'll pinpoint it with acoustic and pressure testing.
Sudden escapes of water are often covered, while gradual leaks and wear and tear often aren't, so check your policy. We document the cause and the repair with photos and a clear written description to support a claim.
Generally, Sydney Water looks after the main and the supply up to your meter, and the pipes beyond that into the property are yours. If you're not sure which side a leak is on, ask us and we'll help you work it out.
Tapes and sealants can slow a drip while you wait, but they won't hold against mains pressure. A proper repair replaces the damaged section, which is why we recommend not relying on a temporary fix.
